61. The Ones Who Stayed

Even in the deepest darkness, when there seems to be no way ahead, what keeps a person moving forward is ambition.

The ambition to become the person we have always dreamed of being. The drive to keep learning, growing, and striving until we master our craft and prove to the world that every criticism was only fuel for our rise.

Jeon Jungkook was a man of that ambition. A visionary, skilled and seasoned, his artistry knew no boundaries. With keen insight and versatility across every field he touched, he stood out as one of a kind.

His ambition carried him to greatness, making him one of the most celebrated artists of all time.

His first victory came when he began creating simple illustrations, assisting Namjoon in designing unique visuals for a comic series. What began as a small collaboration soon gained attention, setting him on a path toward greater recognition. From there, he explored industrial illustrations, following the roots of his imagination wherever they led.

Jungkook never turned down a challenge. Every new project, whether it was a poster for a film or a series, became a canvas for his evolving artistry. He had an extraordinary gift, the ability to capture the essence of an entire story within a single image.

He experimented fearlessly, reinventing himself with every stroke. Adapting to change, embracing new perspectives, and aligning his art with what resonated most with people was his greatest strength.

Through his courage to evolve, Jeon Jungkook grew into an artist of unmatched versatility, a living testament to the power of ambition.

Within just over a year of his work, success found its way to him. Jungkook became incredibly busy with his growing career, which eventually led him to move out of his old home and settle in another residential area of Seoul. There, he had access to his newly built studio inside a mansion he could finally afford through his hard-earned achievements.

Everything happened so quickly. He was desperate for change, determined to transform everything he could around him, his space, his surroundings, his life.

The old house, the place where his journey as an independent artist had begun, was given to his parents. They chose to stay in Seoul, close to their son who, despite living separately due to his work and the new phase of life he had entered, never let them feel alone. His loved ones had always been his first priority.

Jungkook locked his past away in the basement of that old house. Neither he nor his parents ever spoke about it again. He wanted to move forward, to follow only the new light that awaited him.

He threw himself entirely into his work. This time, he used his real name, no longer concealing his identity. He welcomed the fame and recognition that came his way, making his parents prouder than ever.

But the path was far from easy. Every light casts a shadow, and the brighter the light, the darker the shadow it creates.

There were moments when Jungkook lost his way, questioned his potential, and even thought of giving up. Yet in those moments, he always found a reassuring hand on his shoulder.

Kim Namjoon. The man who was destined to meet him.

Ever since Jungkook agreed to design the covers for Namjoon’s books with his perfect illustrations, Namjoon had been the happiest man on the planet. The artist he admired the most was now working for him, and no amount of money could ever feel like enough to return that favor.

Namjoon often suggested new ideas to Jungkook, things even the artist himself didn’t know he could do. But Namjoon always believed in him, always saw the potential before Jungkook did.

Their friendship grew naturally. They enjoyed each other’s company like brothers, spending quiet evenings together, sharing drinks, and talking about life.

Jungkook trusted Namjoon. He didn’t know exactly why, but something about him just felt right.

Time passed, and their bond only strengthened. Eventually, Namjoon became Jungkook’s manager.

Jungkook’s workload grew heavier as he received more and more projects, and Namjoon’s prior experience made him the perfect fit for the job. He had once worked with the auction authority before leaving it behind to pursue his passion for writing. Now, managing Jungkook gave him a chance to see the world differently, to be inspired again, and to keep both passions alive.

Namjoon became one of the most important people in Jungkook’s life, right after his parents.

Jungkook was never good with words, so he expressed his gratitude through actions. He always made sure Namjoon was included in everything, never treated him like just a manager, and always listened to him with respect. He gave Namjoon that privilege because he had seen, time and again, that the man was truly trustworthy.

And Namjoon never complained. There was nothing else he could wish for.

Or maybe, deep down, there still was.

“So, that’s all for today. We don’t have any more work outside. I guess it’s the perfect time for the deal I was talking about,” Namjoon said as he walked into Jungkook’s spacious, sunlit living room, the centerpiece of a grand mansion nestled in a quiet, hilly area reserved for Seoul’s elite. Surrounded by nature’s calm, the house stood far away from the chaos and noise of the city.

Jungkook stood by the tall glass casements that opened into his backyard, his hands tucked into the pockets of his jacket, his gaze fixed on the serene view beyond.

No matter how successful he became, he could never distance himself from nature. It was where he found peace, always.

“Jungkook? Would you mind joining me for a moment?” Namjoon asked again, noticing that Jungkook hadn’t moved, too absorbed in the silence outside.

They had returned from an interview not long ago, and now Namjoon sat comfortably on the long, elegant couch, stacks of files resting beside him, waiting for Jungkook to join.

“It’s spring again…” Jungkook murmured, his voice soft but clear enough for Namjoon to hear, drawing his attention away from the documents.

“It is, Jungkook. It’s April already,” Namjoon replied gently.

Jungkook didn’t turn around. His eyes remained fixed on the large cherry blossom tree in his yard, its petals fluttering in the breeze, falling in slow motion, painting the air with shades of pink and white. The scene looked almost unreal, as if nature itself had paused just for him.

“It’s the sakura season. We should have a drink outside, or maybe a picnic,” Jungkook suggested, finally turning around to face Namjoon.

Namjoon had one leg crossed over the other, his foot tapping lazily as he looked up at Jungkook with quiet attention.

“I wouldn’t mind,” he replied. “But first, give me a few minutes so I can officially call it a day as your manager.” His voice held that firm, managerial tone Jungkook knew too well.

Jungkook let out a soft chuckle. “You can already call it a day. Work’s done, so drop the act and let’s go for that drink. This season’s too distracting.”

He walked over and plopped down on the couch across from Namjoon, the glass table between them reflecting the soft spring light.

“I’ll consider it,” Namjoon said, though he slid a file across the table anyway. “But first, check these and tell me what you think.”

Jungkook scrunched his nose and groaned. “Seriously? I have zero interest right now. I’ll probably just stare at the pages without understanding a thing. Leave it for tomorrow, manager-nim. Tonight, I just want my friend to join me for a drink.”

He pushed the file back toward Namjoon, whose sigh came deep and resigned.

“Of course. How could I insist? You always do what you want anyway.”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa, why do you suddenly sound like a disappointed parent?” Jungkook teased, a playful smile tugging at his lips.

Namjoon shot him a look. “Because I spend my time making you memorize every interview line, and then you go and say whatever comes to mind, making the interviewers think you’re some flirtatious douchebag.”

Jungkook couldn’t help but laugh, his smile widening as he bit gently at the lip ring gleaming under the light.

“Listen,” he said, trying to defend himself, “I have short-term memory loss. I forget what you tell me, and instead of freezing up and making a fool of myself, I just say whatever pops into my head.”

“It’s justifiable,” Namjoon said with a sigh, “but at least try saying something decent next time. You’re going to have even bigger deals in the future, and you know how the media works. They twist even the simplest words just to ruin someone’s image. So, be careful when you’re in front of them. That’s all I’m saying.”

His tone wasn’t scolding, it carried concern, the kind that only came from someone who genuinely cared. Jungkook knew that. He couldn’t disagree.

“You’re right,” Jungkook admitted. “I tend to forget such things. I know the media’s full of snakes, that’s why I never wanted to be part of it in the first place. But anyway, I don’t fucking care.”

He bent down, reaching for an apple from the fruit bowl at the center of the table, biting into it with an easy shrug.

“Anyway, manager-nim,” he said between bites, his lips curling into a grin, “you’re still up for that drink?”

Namjoon chuckled softly. “Yeah, sure. I’ll choose the spot.”

“Perfect!” Jungkook said, his voice lighter now, the weight of work finally slipping off his shoulders.

“I hope this goes well. I really hope everything goes well and they select us. This project could change everything for us. You know this is the only time we can prepare for the presentation, otherwise the finals will take over. I’m still not mentally prepared,” Jimin muttered anxiously, pacing back and forth across the living room of their shared dorm.

He was visibly nervous about the upcoming presentation, the one he’d be giving in just a few days. The presentation where his partner was none other than Taehyung.

Jimin had spent the last few days finishing his part of the work, designing and constructing the model of a building for their project. It was for the Architecture Student Selection Program, a highly anticipated opportunity that would allow chosen students to work on a prestigious project: the design of a new museum soon to be built in their home country, South Korea.

This project wasn’t just another assignment. It was a stepping stone to their future, a chance to be hired as interns, to work alongside real architects, and to finally take the next big step after years of hard work.

They had come so far, nearly at the end of their B.Arch degree from one of Italy’s most renowned universities. Anyone in Jimin’s place would have felt the pressure closing in.

But Taehyung? He sat calmly on the couch, unfazed, quietly scribbling something on a blank sheet of paper. His expression was focused, almost serene, as if Jimin’s panic belonged to another world entirely.

“Taehyungie… are you even listening to me?” Jimin finally asked, his voice rising with frustration. “I have a presentation, you know? I have to explain everything, this entire project, and it’s so difficult because right now I’m losing my mind and I don’t know what to do!”

He dropped beside Taehyung on the couch, running both hands through his hair in pure panic. The sound made Taehyung blink, breaking out of his trance as he turned toward Jimin, his pen hovering midair.

“Jimin-ah, look at me,” Taehyung said quietly, his voice suddenly serious enough to make Jimin stop mid-panic and turn toward him with wide, confused eyes.

“Huh?”

“Like that,” Taehyung murmured, leaning closer. He gently took Jimin’s jaw in his hand, squeezing his cheeks between his fingers and thumb as he studied his face intently. His eyes roamed from one feature to another, tilting Jimin’s head slightly to the side as if inspecting something important.

Jimin blinked rapidly, completely lost. “W-what are you doing?”

Taehyung didn’t answer. His brows furrowed in deep concentration, eyes scanning Jimin’s face with a blank, unreadable expression. The silence stretched, and Jimin’s nerves only grew worse.

Then, without warning, Taehyung released him and turned his attention back to the sketchbook on his lap, pencil scratching quickly across the paper.

“What was that–” Jimin began, but Taehyung cut him off.

“Here,” he said simply, shoving the sketchbook toward Jimin’s face.

“What?”

“I was counting your moles,” Taehyung replied flatly, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

Jimin took the sketchbook carefully, looking down at the page. His lips parted, his eyes softening instantly as he saw the portrait staring back at him, delicate lines, gentle shading, every detail drawn with quiet affection.

“Wow… this is so…” he whispered, unable to find the right word.

“Lame. I know,” Taehyung interrupted, already packing his pencils back into the box.

“Tsk, not at all! Like wow.” Jimin’s face lit up, his excitement bubbling over. “This is my first sketch with this new hairstyle. It’s going straight on my wall, with the others!”

He stood up, holding the sketch at arm’s length, admiring it like a priceless treasure, his earlier anxiety melting away into a bright, boyish grin.

“You're way better than that, you know,” Taehyung replied, making Jimin roll his eyes before grinning shyly.

“Well, since I'm pretty, it makes it easier for you to sketch me pretty. I know," Jimin teased, and Taehyung pressed his lips together, trying to hide a smile.

“Yes, I agree,” Taehyung said, finally standing up.

“Thank you so much, Taehyungie. You always know how to lift me up,” Jimin cheered, impulsively lifting Taehyung off the ground. Despite being the shorter one, Jimin somehow was stronger than Taehyung.

“Currently, you’re the one doing the lifting. Now put me down. Hobi hyung told me to finish a few tasks,” Taehyung reminded him, and Jimin immediately set him down.

“Oh, right! You do that, and I’ll prepare my speech. God, I hope I don’t mess it up.”

“You won’t, Jiminie,” Taehyung said softly, patting his head in reassurance.

The little man could only smile, completely whipped by that gesture.

And Taehyung looked at him, like his entire world rested at that moment.

Maybe it did. Because Taehyung only ever acted this freely around Jimin. He spoke carelessly, shared everything, and trusted that Jimin would always listen.

It had taken an extraordinary amount of patience, understanding, and care for Jimin to gain Taehyung’s trust. To break through the walls he had built around himself, to reach the part of him that few had ever seen. And now, after all that effort, he was the one person who knew Taehyung so intimately, the one who could read the unspoken thoughts behind his quiet gestures, the one who could make him laugh, the one who could calm the storm raging inside him.

For Taehyung, Jimin was more than a friend. He was his sunshine, the rare, constant light that broke through his darkness, the anchor that kept him grounded when life threatened to pull him under.

The second person who had played an equally vital role in shaping the man he had become was none other than his therapist, Jung Hoseok, Jimin’s cousin. It was Hoseok’s guidance and relentless support that had allowed Taehyung to open up, to smile like a normal person again, to regain his voice and the confidence to speak freely with Jimin.

Of course, Taehyung still had moments when the darkness crept back in, when his old fears and insecurities resurfaced. But Hoseok was always there, ready to guide him through it, to help him rebuild his strength, to ensure that he grew mentally resilient. The bond between them was professional yet deeply compassionate, a rare blend of discipline and empathy that had saved Taehyung in ways few could comprehend.

The story of how Hoseok had come to be assigned to Taehyung was long and complicated, but it was one of those quiet interventions in life that changed everything. Everyone in Taehyung’s family was aware of his importance, and they had made sure to compensate him well for his work.

Looking back, Taehyung knew that none of this, his present happiness, his sense of safety, his ability to trust and love, would have been possible if his family had been more attentive when it mattered most. Their negligence could have cost them dearly.

They could have lost one of their sons forever.
